Breaking from traditional methods, Adult & Teen Challenge takes a holistic approach to addiction recovery. Instead of focusing on psychotherapy and 12-step programs, holistic treatment focuses on all aspects of an individual’s life to reassess one’s behavior, attitudes, and way-of-thinking.
Holistic addiction recovery centers on the individual. At Adult & Teen Challenge, we believe that drug and alcohol addiction stems from a lack in an individual’s life, whether that lack is physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. Holistic treatment works to fulfill that lack by providing treatment that covers all four areas of health.
Drug abuse takes an extreme toll on the body, affecting your organs and muscles, ruining your sleep cycle, and increasing your chances of acquiring certain diseases. In a holistic drug treatment program, a healthy diet and plenty of exercise is key to recovery. Some of our locations focus on recreational therapy, encouraging young people to participate in sports or outdoor activities like fishing and hiking.
Negative thought patterns and beliefs strongly influence addictive behavior. When one has a negative outlook on life and a negative perception of self, they may turn to drugs and alcohol for comfort. Unfortunately, drug-use only makes negative thought-patterns worsen, leaving people feeling hopeless and isolated. In a holistic drug program, counselors and mentors work with students to change their outlook on life.
Problems with emotional health are one of the main reasons why people turn to drugs and alcohol. Feeling angry or depressed, people may use drugs as a means to alleviate those feelings. Although drugs may make them feel good in the moment, emotional problems only worsen when they come down from their high. We work to tackle underlying emotional problems and teach people healthy, constructive ways to deal with depression and anger.
Spiritual health is one of the main cornerstones of addiction recovery at Adult & Teen Challenge USA. In fact, the “Jesus factor” is one of the reasons why our programs are so effective. By focusing on biblically-based teaching, we teach recovering addicts to embody Christian values and form a relationship with God. By taking a Christ-centered approach, our programs leave people feeling empowered and spiritually alive, making them less likely to return to drugs and alcohol in the future.
