Self-harm is an intent action of physically harming one’s body without a direct attempt of suicide. Those that self-harm may do so as an unhealthy coping mechanism to relieve themselves from the pain of stress, anxiety, emotional numbness, abuse or trauma. Cutting (using sharp edges/razors to cut the skin) is the most common form of self-harm. Other methods include burning, scratching, hair pulling, ingesting poisons, or preventing wounds from healing.

“From my earliest memories I was filled with emptiness, loneliness and fear, By the time I was 10, I had started cutting myself as an outlet for my inner pain. It wasn’t long before I was smoking cigarettes, smoking pot and drinking to fill the hole in my heart. I was raped twice and didn’t value myself or my body.
“I got married, but after a miscarriage and a car accident I started using my pills to escape reality. Eventually my husband left me. My life was destroyed, I started stabbing and burning myself and was introduced to meth. I tried to commit suicide.
“After a 30 day rehab I stared using heroin and cocaine daily. I had another miscarriage and again tried to commit suicide. At the hospital they told me I was pregnant and I decided to get help for me and my baby. I went to Adult & Teen Challenge and there God changed my life.”
